SA Adventure Industry Association (SA AIA) Launches New Water Safety Chapter to Empower Schools, Parents, and Communities

The South African Adventure Industry Association (SA AIA) is proud to announce the official launch of its Water Safety Chapter, a dedicated initiative aimed at raising awareness and promoting safe water practices across South Africa.

With a growing number of water-related activities in both educational and recreational settings, the need for accessible, practical water safety resources has never been greater. This new chapter marks an important step towards protecting lives — especially those of children — in, on, and around water.

Starting with Schools and Families

The Water Safety Chapter’s first major focus will be an educational campaign targeting schools and parents. This nationwide initiative will provide essential resources to schools, caregivers, and parents, including:

Water Safety Awareness Checklists

Guidelines for Risk Assessments

The Right Questions to Ask Before Any Water Activity

These resources are designed to help parents, teachers, and school administrators make informed, safety-first decisions when it comes to swimming lessons, excursions, camps, and any water-based activities.

Why It Matters

“Water safety isn’t just for swimming pools — it’s about ensuring that every child, educator, and caregiver is equipped with the knowledge and tools to stay safe around water, whether at school, on holiday, or at home,” says Deon Breytenbach, Water Safety Chapter Spokesperson at SA AIA.

The Water Safety Chapter aims to support schools and parents with practical, easy-to-use tools they can implement immediately while fostering a culture of safety and responsibility in communities nationwide.

More to Come

This campaign is just the start. The Water Safety Chapter will expand to include:

  • Workshops through our members for teachers and outdoor leaders

  • Water safety audits for schools and camps (Part of our LOTC Toolkit Initiative)

  • Advocacy for improved national water safety policies

SA AIA invites all schools, parents, outdoor leaders, and adventure operators to get involved and help spread these lifesaving messages.
